Brand Spotlight | Trudon

Trudon is a quintessential French brand, born in Paris and manufactured in Normandy, that once served the imperial French court and perfected a method of diluting beeswax to create pristine, white candles.

In 1643, Claude Trudon sold his first candle out of a small Parisian shop on rue Saint Honoré. Nearly a century later, his heir would buy the Royal Wax Manufacture—the only one of its time to innovate perfectly white beeswax candles. Honored with a gold medal at the World Exposition in 1889, Trudon’s legacy would continue until it was finally secured by the launch of the Cire Trudon candle line in Normandy, 2007.

Hand-poured into Tuscan-made glass inspired by traditional champagne buckets, each candle of the classic line is fitted with a cotton wick and filled by beeswax scented with an expert hand. The emblem is a nod to a bas relief found at the old Royal Wax Manufacture, and honors the bees that made each candle possible until 2018 when the brand shifted from beeswax to a vegetable base, in a conservation effort for their beloved honeybees.

Trudon's candle line went on to explore several avenues, from the L'Esprit line inspired by the natural elements to another called the Tuileries, invoking Marie Antoinette's precious rose garden. Still another is made entirely of Alabaster—sculpted in Spain out of a single block, veins running along the luminescent surface for a unique finish to each decorative piece.

Yet for all the handcraft and care that goes into their fragrance, Trudon's most fantastical and curious accomplishment lies in their wax sculpture novelty candles, modeled after prominent figures of French history. Maison Trudon requested a partnership with the French National Museum Council to be granted the rights of reproducing some jewels from its Molding Workshop catalogue.

Upon approval, the master artisans of Trudon set to work meticulously capturing the likeness of figures such as Marie Antoinette, Napoleon in Bleu and Noir, Louis XIV, Louise and Alexandre — and when those did exceptionally well, a handful of Ex Voto Wax Hands in Noir, Bleu, and Rose.

And for their latest addition, circling back to the beating heart of fragrance within the company, Trudon delved into the world of parfumerie to craft an exceptional series of delicate scents. A decadent attempt to transport the senses to other cultures and locations around the world, these are largely unisex.

Trudon perfumes contain an olfactory complexity that hints at a character rather than a genre. They cast light on Trudon’s ethos: to promote creative freedom and invoke unique horizons.

Whether candle, diffuser, or eau de parfum, Trudon represents artwork and French history at its finest.
